What is Nonpareils?

Nonpareils, also called sprinkles, are a sweet ingredient used to decorate desserts. They are roughly the size of a round pin head and have a hard texture that crunches when you bite into it. In the 1800's cornstarch was used for starching laundry, making the clothing appear stiff and professional.

Dextrin is a substance made from starch and most commonly from corn starch. It is white, yellow or brown and starchy in texture. It is used in food production to make food crisper and is used in coatings and glazes. It is fairly flavorless and enhances appearance and texture.

Artificial colors are used in food and beverage production and their sole purpose is to add color to whatever they are added to. Artificial color is lab made from petroleum and has a thin liquid viscosity. It comes in many colors, the most common, being red, blue, green and yellow.
